Xeomin, Botox, Dysport….wait!? What, which, where, who, and how,

Xeomin, Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Daxxify-The five FDA approved Neuromodulators

**What are Neuromodulators?**

In the Southern United States, it is common for individuals to refer to all carbonated beverages as "Coke." Similarly, if I require moisturizer for chapped lips, I might simply request Chapstick. If a friend has overindulged in alcohol, they may ask for a Tylenol. The term BOTOX® has similarly become synonymous with all neuromodulators, also known as neurotoxins or non-surgical injections. However, it is important to note that five different neurotoxins are FDA-approved: Xeomin®, BOTOX®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify®. These injectable neuromodulators contain botulinum toxin type A and are primarily utilized in the aesthetic industry to diminish laugh lines, fine lines, and wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles. This process can be likened to putting a muscle to sleep, resulting in a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. With a consistent treatment plan, these injections can also help prevent the further development of wrinkles.

**When faced with a list of available neuromodulators at varying price points, which one should I choose?**

  • **BOTOX®**: Many practitioners believe this is most effective for brow lifts and lip flips.
  • **Dysport®**: It is often recommended for treating the flat forehead area.
  • **Xeomin®**: Known as the "naked" neurotoxin, Xeomin lacks additives in its formulation, making it a purer form of botulinum toxin A. This may yield better results for individuals who have developed a resistance to the additives present in other formulations, as it diffuses into the tissues differently. Xeomin is particularly effective for smoothing deeper frown lines between the brows.
  • **Jeuveau®**: Typically used for a more natural appearance, Jeuveau is often priced lower, making it an attractive option for patients on a tighter budget.
  • **Daxxify®**: This is a newer option that should be approached with caution, as its effects are reported to last longer. For new patients, this extended duration raises concerns regarding potential complications.

Although Daxxify® is an exception, the duration of effects for these neurotoxins generally ranges from 3 to 4 months, with some results becoming visible within hours, while others may take 10 to 14 days to fully manifest. Dysport® is often noted for its quicker onset, though opinions vary regarding its longevity compared to competitors; some believe it may not last as long, particularly for individuals with a higher metabolic rate. BOTOX® and Xeomin® typically take 3 to 10 days to reach full effect, with a similar duration of 3 to 4 months.

Ultimately, the choice of neurotoxin should be tailored to each individual, as preferences and responses can vary significantly. For instance, while Claritin may be ineffective for my allergies, Zyrtec works well for me. My mother, on the other hand, finds the opposite to be true. Just as each individual’s face is unique, so too should be the approach taken by their injector.

**Why Choose Neuromodulators?**

All of these products have received FDA approval for cosmetic purposes, with some also being utilized for medical applications. Aesthetically, neuromodulators primarily aid in wrinkle reduction, providing smoother results without the need for surgery, thereby minimizing risks and complications.

**Who Should Administer the Treatment?**

Selecting the right professional for your injections—be it a doctor, nurse, or licensed injector—is crucial. I have observed that some assistants may demonstrate greater skill than certain plastic surgeons, and vice versa. Not all practitioners possess the same level of artistry; just as cooking is not my forte, neither is singing. While I excel in music and dance, it’s best that I refrain from singing during your injection to avoid any discomfort.

It is also vital to choose a professional with whom you feel comfortable discussing your personal goals and needs. For example, many individuals have asymmetrical facial features; my left eyebrow muscle has always been stronger than my right. It is essential to communicate such details to your injector to achieve the desired outcome. Furthermore, trust is paramount. I once switched to a new friend who owned a spa, thinking it would be a beneficial collaboration. However, after noticing that the results did not last as long as expected, I returned to my original physician, realizing that the neuromodulator had been diluted. This experience eroded my trust, and consequently, the ten patients I had referred to her also left.

Your face is a unique and vital aspect of your identity, an original piece of art, and it brings me immense joy to customize a treatment plan specifically for you. It is truly an honor to assist you in this journey. Thank you for your interest, and I hope to see you soon!
